Remembrance Picnic – Sunday 16 November 2025

A Gentle Day of Remembrance at Te Puna Quarry Park

The Remembrance Picnic is always a special part of our year at GSS. This year the sun was shining, and the park setting seemed to wrap around us in support. As I looked around, I was reminded that grief is different for everyone. People were at different stages in their journey, and it felt important that this event offered space to come exactly as you are.

Some crafted quietly, some stayed close to the music, and for others the day felt heavier. They carried a lot, yet came anyway. I saw courage and strength in that. And I noticed how no one was left on their own. There was always someone nearby sharing the weight.

Many people commented that the day felt more like a gentle celebration than a heavy occasion. Some arrived feeling nervous, planning to stay briefly, yet found themselves lingering until the end, settled by the warmth and ease of the space.

The trees were lined with photos of loved ones lost too soon. Seeing their faces in the sunlight, surrounded by community, felt as though they were part of the day, part of the remembering.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this day possible, the attendees who showed such courage, the volunteers who gave their time and care, the Te Puna Quarry Park community for the beautiful space, and our funders, donors, and sponsors for their ongoing tautoko. Your presence and generosity helped create a gentle day of remembrance for all.
